Green Entrepreneurship – Fight against Plastic Pollution | Ashwath Hegde
The plastic that dissolves in water. Environmentalist Ashwath Hegde talks about his journey of entrepreneurship to manufacture biodegradable plastic. In the pursuit to eradicate the destructions caused by the rising use of plastics, Ashwath Hegde found his way to do so by marketing his patented product ‘EnviGreen’ carry bags. Made from vegetable waste and vegetable oil derivatives, the bags have been certified as plastic free by the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board and the global certification and testing firm TÜV SÜD South Asia. His zest for work in the right direction has made him find a spot in the prestigious Forbes’ 30 under 30 list in 2017. Completing his schooling and college from Mangalore, Ashwath Hegde, a management degree holder saw himself venturing into entrepreneurship while in the pursuit to eradicate the destructions caused by the rising use of plastics. Hegde’s journey began in 2012 when the city corporation of his hometown Mangalore (Now Mangaluru), Karnataka, banned plastic bags. In search of substitutes, he formed an R&D team with the help of a few European friends. Four years of R & D team bore fruit in 2016 when the company launched its first GoGreen Campaign in the State of Qatar. In August 2016 Ashwath Hegde founded “Envigreen Biotech Pvt Ltd” to manufacture India’s first 100% plastic-free substitute to plastic packaging products. His zest for work in the right direction has made him find a spot in the prestigious Forbes’ 30 under 30 list in 2017. The use of solar-powered irrigation systems and agricultural extension services, that make it cheaper and easier for farmers. Samir Ibrahim is the co-founder of a company called SunCulture which designs and sells solar-powered irrigation systems and agricultural extension services, that make it cheaper and easier for farmers to grow fresh fruits and vegetables. This innovation has pioneered a system that delivers water directly to crop roots, increasing yield by 300% and reducing water usage by up to 90%. They are changing prospects for farmers across Kenya where only 4% of the land is currently under irrigation and yet over 80% of country is considered arid or semi arid and therefore unsuitable for purely rain-fed agriculture. Wandile's Story: An Entrepreneur Changing Lives in Soweto
Wandile Solombela is a fashion student-turned-entrepreneur who is using business to transform people's lives in Soweto, South Africa. Wandile runs a business called Shwe Shwe Poppi Dolls (http://www.shweshwepoppis.com). The dolls are based on a series of original children's drawings produced by children at the African Children's Feeding Scheme in Soweto. They are made by women from the community. South Africa's largest township still faces challenges including poverty, poor infrastructure, crime, and a mixed education system that means many Soweto residents struggle to achieve their potential. Wandile started the Shwe Shwe Poppi business because he was asked to teach women sewing skills. As well as teaching a new skill, he wanted to help create sustainable employment for the community and boost self esteem. The dolls are now sold in the US, Europe and Africa. Wandile is supported by the Branson Centre of Entrepreneurship in Johannesburg which gives budding young entrepreneurs the skills, opportunities and inspiration they need to launch and grow their businesses.
